President Richard L. McCormick’s long-term Campus and Community initiative seeks to redesign campus environments to attract top faculty, staff, and students; strengthen Rutgers’ ties with its host communities; and create a state university that is a major source of pride for New Jersey. In addition, the major transformation of undergraduate education now taking place in New Brunswick provides an ideal opportunity to refocus and sharpen campus missions.
As part of these efforts, President McCormick convened a working group of academic and administrative leaders to help define a compelling academic vision for the Livingston Campus. The group is studying the feasibility of locating the academic disciplines of business, management and labor relations, education, and social work on Livingston. This would enhance professional education and the training of undergraduate, graduate, and executive-level and continuing education students and encourage collaborative research that addresses state needs and fosters economic development and social progress.
To complement this academic vision, the university is exploring the possibility of creating an environmentally sound, sustainable, and attractive pedestrian-friendly community at Livingston, one that combines intelligent development with accessible green space and a reliable transportation network.
These feasibility studies are very preliminary and represent a first step toward making the Livingston Campus a vibrant destination for the university community and the public. The university is working on this project with Ayers Saint Gross, the campus planning and building design firm that helped Rutgers develop its physical master plan in 2003, and Jones Lang LaSalle, a leading real estate money management and service firm.
As the project moves forward, there will be opportunities for public discussion.
